North Lincolnshire Council has written to several fast food businesses to propose a new scheme where vehicle registration numbers are recorded when customers collect their takeaway orders. The goal is to deter littering by allowing authorities to trace discarded packaging back to the vehicle responsible.
Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said the initiative aims to create a deterrent effect. "If packaging is later dumped at the roadside or in the countryside, there is the potential to trace it back to the vehicle it came from," he stated. While he wants to collaborate with restaurants, he acknowledged that the responsibility ultimately lies with individuals who discard waste.
McDonald's has expressed concerns about the proposal's effectiveness and data protection regulations, limiting their ability to share customer data. However, the company remains committed to combating litter through daily patrols and community engagement. "We will continue to work with the council on effective ways to combat litter," a McDonald's spokesperson said.
The scheme would apply to businesses with drive-through or takeaway operations in Scunthorpe, Barton-upon-Humber, and the wider North Lincolnshire area. The council hopes that implementing this measure will encourage better waste disposal habits and improve the cleanliness of the region.
